Indulkana Anangu School

Indulkana (Iwantja) School is situated west of the Stuart Highway in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara lands (APY Lands) of South Australia. For this project, our design focus was to deliver a robust, functional landscape that provided meaningful spaces for children, staff, and Community members to play, learn, and enjoy while maintaining a strong connection to their culture. The final design outcome was achieved through close consultation with Community representatives, the school Principal and key staff.

Landscape elements that reinforced strong cultural ties were the inclusion of mosaic inlays throughout paved areas made by the children through the Community’s arts program. Rock elements and some materials were sourced from the Indulkana Lands in specific areas shown by Community elders.

Logistics associated with the isolation of the site were at times challenging while living within the Community throughout the design and construction progress was enjoyable and educational.

The success of the project was measured by the enormous appreciation shown by the Community and school. We thank them for the opportunity.
